The procedure involves the vascular surgeon removing the lining of the carotid artery that has become damaged or thickened, eliminating plaque from the artery and restoring blood flow.

The carotid arteries are located on each side of the neck and extend from the aorta in the chest to the base of the skull, supplying blood to the brain. Carotid artery disease can create clots on the plaque which can block blood flow to the brain resulting in an ischemic stroke or a mini-stroke.
